Rod Poynter grew up listening to Melbourne radio of the 1960's, and was an aspiring announcer by age ten.
After a year with Clarke Sinclair’s ‘Announcer’s Academy’, his career kicked off at 3CS, Colac in 1973; with stops along the way at Warrnambool, Maryborough, Bendigo, 7HO Hobart; 3GL Geelong and 2WL Wollongong. In the 'Gong, he also wrote a weekly current affairs column, ‘Poynter View’, for the Illawarra Mercury.
In 1986, Rod was sidelined for 12 months following a major car accident.
1993 saw a move to Sydney, and stints at 2SM, 2UE, 2GB and the Sky Network.
"I've done literally thousands of interviews," he says, citing an encounter with Spike Milligan as a career highlight. "He went right over the top, and actually got quite nasty…though, I wouldn't have missed it!"
Another eccentric was Tiny Tim, "a wonderful guy with an incredible knowledge of 1930's music."
Speaking of music, over the years Rod has met and interviewed some of the great performers - from Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney and Del Shannon to Olivia Newton-John, Judy Stone, Normie Rowe and many more - adding further to his enjoyment of ‘playing the music you grew up with’, each afternoon on Bay FM.
